Janus Films will be distributing new digitally restored 35mm prints of Fassbinder’s epic 1973 film ‘World on a Wire.’ Appearing at MoMA twice in the last 2 years, it was somewhat expected that Janus would restore the work. If the film generates enough profit and attention during national circulation, it is also probable that Criterion will be reissuing it sometime next year.
Either way, this surreal meets sci-fi film is a lost gem, both for film history as well as understanding the epistemological processes of living in a world where we increasingly relinquish our psyches to a media saturated, technologically infused way of life. The film both maps out early paranoias and anticipates the techno-future. Names like Kubrick, Phillip K. Dick, and Vonnegut are often thrown around when discussing this film, and rightly so. But still, in terms of German Films in the 70s, that deal with dystopia and techno-invasion; I hope and believe that this film is the tip of the iceberg, and that many, many more await our discovery.
