Wolf Vostell Television Décollage, 1963

Originally released in 1982 on the Italian avant-garde label/gallery/publishing house Multhipla, one would be hard-pressed to find Wolf Vostell’s Dé-Coll/age Musik. (Or anything else released via Multhipla) Thankfully, Berlin-based collective “Tochnit Aleph” has reissued the work, but only on CD– which is kind of a bummer. Especially bc they have done LP’s.  Taking after Multhipla, they have done some very interesting projects, which straddle contemporary art and record-nerd culture. Like Artur Zmikewski’s 2001 performance/video/etc. Singing Lesson which I was only familiar with as a video installation. It would work equally well as a sound recording, which is (brilliantly) what Tochnit Aleph released in an edition of 300.

Much of Wolf Vostell’s work deals with the concept of de-collage,  a philosophy  built around the idea that destruction is all around us. He used the doctored-term dé-coll/age to refer to the process of tearing down posters, and for the use of mobile fragments of reality. His first Happening, Theater is in the Street, took place in Paris in 1958, and incorporated auto parts and a TV. He put this concept of dé-coll/age into practice with video, sound and performance.

The recordings are offered chronologically, beginning in 1959, around the same time he was unveiling his TV dé-coll/ages, and extending to 1981. Real-life events, dialogues, and existing recorded materials are spliced apart, ragged at the ends.
